Someone fed the studio execs after midnight again.

Warner Bros. wants to reboot the Gremlins franchise for the umpteenth time. Making this kind of announcement is a bit like the traditional “let’s make a Goonies sequel” thing that happens about as often.
The last time this came up, I drew this comic, so just imagine I posted an extra one this week.
If they must revive Gremlins, I don’t see why it has to be a reboot. If they can manage to keep it in the comedy-horror genre (and that means some occasionally scary things, WB. Don’t make this something for the same crowd that watches Nick Jr.) then I don’t see why it can’t be a sequel. One of the hardest things to establish with more modern horror creatures is a sense of history. Have the first two movies referenced as urban legends by the characters. Heck, it’ll save time if someone knows the rules surrounding the critters because they read it on the internet somewhere.
Of course the real fight, if this ever goes forward, is going to be between Team Animatronics and Team CGI with Team “Use Them Both” trying to mediate a settlement.

I do think that making a sequel of sorts would be far more interesting than a reboot.
One of my favorite scenes in the first was Gizmo’s attitude of “been there done that seen it all” with regard to the first time he gets wet. Made it clear this wasn’t the first time and that things would only get worse.
As you say, a sense of history is tough and it would be fun.
